Coffee. Pan. Quesitos. Cold cuts. Lottery tickets. Hot food. Somebody grabbing breakfast. Somebody staying to talk.

Panadería is my ongoing visual love letter to the neighborhood places where Puerto Rican everyday life keeps happening right in front of us.

BEFORE THE PAINTING

From the notebook.

These are my own reference photographs. I photograph the ordinary things that make me stop: counters, cups, pastries, signs, bags and little moments that somehow already feel like memory.

The paintings do not begin with an idea of making Puerto Rico prettier. They begin with looking closely at what is already there.

✿ I am not trying to make the panadería prettier than it is. I am trying to notice why the ordinary version becomes so precious when we remember it.
