Miel y Pique was born from a memory of driving with my father to the lechonera. Outside, classic cars lined the street while a carved cement table held bottles of homemade honey and Puerto Rican pique, some poured into recycled Don Q, Black Label and Palo Viejo bottles filled with peppers, herbs and spices.
Blurred edges and soft layers of green, yellow and purple make the scene feel like memory seen through myopia. It is a tribute to everyday Puerto Rican traditions, the flavors and colors that linger long after the moment passes.
Part of my Platos y Juegos collection, this original painting celebrates the tables of Puerto Rico as places where food, culture, memory and belonging are preserved.
