Jugando Los Manos began at my grandfather’s birthday table: my daughter to my right, my husband across from me, and abuelo to my left. Three generations, a good game of dominó, tally marks on paper, laughter over drinks.
The scene opened older memories too: walking with my grandfather to the grocery store, bank and lottery stop; brushing his hair while he pulled numbers from hand-carved wooden tiles; watching him play solitaire and somehow always letting me “win.”
Dominoes have always been more than a game for us. They are a mesa de memorias, where Puerto Rican family life, friendship, play and storytelling meet. Warm yellows, soft whites and blurred edges hold that feeling of nostalgia, like joy remembered through myopia.
