Her Tempest

Her Tempest came before the songs. I was thinking about the ocean herself—her power, protection, the silence before a storm, and the way she can feel both merciless and just. The sea does not choose sides. She reaches every shore.

The piece grew from photographs, walks to the water, changing weather, and the charged quiet before rain. I was not trying to copy one view, but to paint the experience of being with the shoreline.

Years later, my husband Tino Ashaw’s music—especially the ideas behind Shared Storms and two coasts sharing one sea—gave me language for another layer I now see in the work: Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin America connected by the same water.
