A Shaw Homeschool Hub โ€ข for the grown-ups

HOMESCHOOL
WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND.

A practical parent hub for building a homeschool around your actual child, your actual family and your actual life.

You do not have to recreate a school building at your kitchen table.

Where are you right now?
๐ŸŒฑ I'm brand newStart with what your child actually needs.
โฐ Our days are a messBuild a rhythm that bends.
๐Ÿ“š I need free resourcesLibraries, community and useful rabbit holes.
๐Ÿง  I'm figuring out my kidHow do they actually learn?
๐Ÿ’ก I need lesson ideasStart with something they already care about.
๐Ÿ’ฐ My kid wants to make or sell somethingTurn an interest into a real-world business lesson.

WHAT DO I ACTUALLY NEED?

Less than the internet makes it sound like.
+

Start with your child, a legal starting point, a few important skills and a way to remember what you actually did.

๐ŸŒฑ CuriosityNotice what makes your child ask questions, tell stories, make things or investigate.
๐Ÿ“– Core skillsReading, writing, math and the communication skills they use everywhere.
๐ŸŒŽ Real lifeCooking, museums, errands, nature, conversations and the world around you count.
๐Ÿ“‚ RecordsKeep attendance, work samples, photos, dates and whatever your local rules require.
๐Ÿ›’ What should I buy first?
As little as possible. Borrow, test free resources and learn what your child actually uses before buying the homeschool aisle.
MINIMUM VIABLE HOMESCHOOL: Read. Practice something important. Notice the world. Make or explain something. Keep a little record. Adjust tomorrow.
โฐ
Build your day

MAKE A RHYTHM YOUR FAMILY CAN ACTUALLY LIVE IN.

Predictability can help. Rigidity is optional.
+

You are building a rhythm, not recreating seven school periods and a bell.

โ˜€๏ธ Light Day
Reading + one important subject + life.
๐ŸŽ’ Normal Day
Core academics โ†’ break โ†’ project/reading block or interest-led activity โ†’ real life.
๐Ÿš— Field Day
Library, museum, community program, nature, appointment or purposeful errand. Bring the questions home.
๐ŸŒช Chaos Day
Read together. Practice one thing. Survive. Tomorrow still exists.
RHYTHM CHECK: If your schedule only works when nobody is tired, sick, curious, late or human, the schedule needs adjusting.
๐Ÿ“š
Use your community

YOUR LIBRARY CARD IS A HOMESCHOOL SUPPLY.

Books are only the beginning.
+

Homeschool or not, this is one of those things I tell parents all the time: go check your library. Before automatically buying another resource, see what already exists around you.

๐Ÿ“š I HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR LIBRARIES.
I grew up around libraries and learned early that they can be much more than shelves of books. Depending on the library, you may find research help, internet access, databases, archives, workshops, children's programming, local history and people who know where to look.
๐Ÿ”Ž Ask a librarianResearch help, local knowledge and someone who knows where to look.
๐Ÿ“ฑ Check digitalE-books, databases, research tools and educational platforms may be available.
๐Ÿ—“ Check the calendarClubs, STEAM, workshops, teen events, story times and family programs.
๐Ÿ—ฃ Ask what unlocksPasses, partnerships, classes and programs may not be obvious.
CH 787 โ€ข PUERTO RICO

PUERTO RICO'S LIBRARIES ARE ALREADY HERE.

Now there's a searchable national directory designed to help people discover libraries throughout the archipelago.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ท EXPLORE PUERTO RICO'S LIBRARY DIRECTORY โ†’
MINI MISSION: Find one library you didn't know existed. Let your child pick one question to investigate there. That's a lesson.

The Puerto Rico library directory is an initiative connected with Libraries Without Borders US and supported by the Mellon Foundation. Individual libraries may have different access rules, services and schedules.

How learning works

START WITH THE CHILD. THEN LET IT BRANCH.

Interest can be the doorway into serious learning.
+

Kids do not all care about the same doorway. Start with what gets your child asking, collecting, drawing, building, reading, watching or saying, โ€œWaitโ€ฆ how does THAT work?โ€

๐ŸŽจ Art โ†’ history โ†’ chemistry/materials โ†’ geometry โ†’ culture โ†’ writing
๐ŸŽฎ Games โ†’ storytelling โ†’ coding โ†’ probability โ†’ design โ†’ music
๐Ÿณ Cooking โ†’ fractions โ†’ chemistry โ†’ culture โ†’ history โ†’ budgeting
๐ŸŒฑ Nature โ†’ biology โ†’ weather โ†’ geography โ†’ data โ†’ drawing
๐ŸŽต Music โ†’ poetry โ†’ physics โ†’ math โ†’ history โ†’ identity
๐Ÿ€ Sports + movement โ†’ anatomy โ†’ statistics โ†’ physics โ†’ teamwork โ†’ biography
INTEREST ISN'T THE WHOLE CURRICULUM.
It can be the doorway into it.
๐Ÿšช
Build a lesson

PICK A DOORWAY. BUILD A LESSON.

Start with a real question. Let subjects meet each other.
+

Say your child asks: โ€œWhy does the tiny tree move so much in Puerto Rico?โ€

1. QUESTIONWhat are we trying to understand?
2. FINDLibrary, book, map, expert, museum or trustworthy source.
3. CONNECTWhat subjects naturally live inside the question?
4. MAKEDraw, test, cook, map, build, calculate or create.
5. SHOWExplain it, write it, photograph it or teach somebody.
๐ŸŒŽ GeographyWhere does it happen? What does place change?
๐Ÿงช ScienceWhat physical or biological process is happening?
๐Ÿ“š HistoryHow did we get here? Who came before?
๐ŸŽจ Art + MakingCan we draw, model, photograph or build it?
YOU'RE BUILDING THE LESSON WHEN YOU: follow a real question โ†’ find reliable information โ†’ connect disciplines โ†’ make something โ†’ explain what you learned.
๐Ÿ’ก
Build something real

LET THEM BUILD SOMETHING REAL.

Sometimes the lesson becomes a thing, service, project or tiny business.
+

School skills get interesting when they have somewhere to go. A child can practice math, writing, design, communication and decision-making through a real project.

๐Ÿ‘€ NOTICEWhat problem or need do I see?
๐Ÿ’ก IDEAWhat could I make, do or improve?
๐Ÿ’ต MATHWhat does it cost? What is a fair price?
๐Ÿ›  MAKEBuild, test and improve it.
๐Ÿ“ฃ SHAREExplain the value clearly and ethically.
Let pricing become math. Materials + time + expenses + price + change + profit.
Let inventory become math too. Count, organize, compare, predict and record.
Entrepreneurship is not only selling. It's noticing needs, solving problems, communicating and learning from results.
FAMILY STANDARD: Build something useful. Price fairly. Tell the truth. Learn what worked. Improve it.
๐Ÿ“‚
Laws + paperwork

KNOW THE RULES. KEEP THE RECEIPTS.

Requirements change by location. Records make life easier.
+

Use reputable legal overviews to orient yourself, but verify important requirements with current official sources for your location and circumstances.

โš–๏ธ Homeschool lawStart with the rules where you actually live.
๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ท Puerto RicoKeep Puerto Rico requirements and local context in mind.
๐Ÿช– Military / PCSMoving may change which rules apply.
๐Ÿ“ Parent paperworkTemplates help you keep the paper trail manageable.
๐Ÿ“ What might live in the homeschool folder?
Attendance, curriculum information, grades/progress reports, writing samples, assessments, projects, reading lists, field-trip notes, important correspondence and copies of anything submitted to a school or agency.

Military + moving families

PCS AGAIN? EDUCATION CAN MOVE TOO.

The system can change. Your child's learning doesn't disappear.
+

Military life taught me that sometimes the school plan has to bend with the education falling apart. Moves, deployments and changing locations make organized records especially valuable.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Build a portable education file.
Keep copies of attendance, curriculum/course descriptions, progress or grades, assessments, accommodations, work samples, reading lists, important school correspondence and documents you may need after a move.
๐Ÿงญ School liaisonAsk about education options and transition resources connected to your installation.
๐Ÿ“š LibrariesCheck installation and community library resources wherever you land.
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป TutoringCheck current military-family eligibility for tutoring and academic support.
โš–๏ธ New locationRecheck homeschool requirements after a move instead of assuming the old rules followed you.
๐Ÿช– MILITARY ONESOURCE: HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES โ†’
PCS CHECK: Before the boxes disappear into the truck, make one education folder that travels with youโ€”not buried in household goods.

Real-life homeschool

SOMETHING ISN'T WORKING.

Good. That's information.
+
๐Ÿ˜ข Math ends in tears.
Reduce the load. Change the explanation, medium or time of day. Find the missing skill before piling on another worksheet.
๐Ÿ“š My child hates the curriculum.
Separate โ€œthey dislike this formatโ€ from โ€œthey cannot learn this subject.โ€ Try another doorway.
๐Ÿ“… We're โ€œbehind.โ€
Behind whom? Identify the skills that actually matter next and work from there.
๐Ÿ˜ต I am burned out.
Simplify. Library day. Read-aloud day. Documentary and discussion. Reset before rebuilding.
๐Ÿคฏ My child seems overwhelmed.
Cut visual and task clutter. Give one clear next step. Build back slowly.
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿง‘ My child needs more people.
Look at clubs, libraries, sports, classes, community groups, volunteering and interest-based activities.
๐Ÿงฉ I think my child needs more support.
